Users of 4 Social Media Messaging Apps in Uganda To Pay Taxes

In Uganda, taxes have been imposed on the users of Whatsapp, Viber, Facebook and Twitter over their social media usage. The tax was implemented because of chatters that were prominent on such platforms. The Amendment bill will charge social media users, 5 cent daily.

The bill will also charge a one percent levy on mobile money transactions. The tax is expected to commence on 1st July, however the method of enforcement is yet to be announced.

Yoweri Museveni, President of Uganda, informed the Finance Minister, Matia Kasaija, in March, that it would be a good way to generate revenue for the country.
