The three social tech giants, Google, Facebook and Twitter have promised to work on the same side with other tech companies to combat the spread of fake news online that could potentially destroy political elections in Europe. This alliance follows European Union’s call on tech firms in April this year to find a strategy to curb wrong information online or face sanctions.
The tech groups including advertising organizations, presented a code of conduct to the European Commission. The European Digital Commissioner, Mariya Gabriel, accepted the code of conduct and encouraged the social media giants to pay attention to its effective implementation as the commission was looking forward to that.
The signatories on the code of conduct agreed to invest in technologies and products that would ensure that online news consumers can report fake news and have access to only authentic news. Additionally, the firms agreed to increase efforts to develop sense of trust by collaborating with other news organizations.
