25% of SME’s In Ghana Unaware of Cybercrime

About a quarter of SMEs in Ghana are unaware of cybercrime and the risks it poses to them. A 2016 survey by Better Business Bureau (BBB), on Ghana, revealed that about a third of respondents were ignorant of point-of-sale (POS) malware. POS malware steals information from credit cards through the applications running on POS systems, when there isn’t adequate endpoint protection available.

Better Business Bureau a US-based non-profit organization whose mission is advancing marketplace trust, in their survey discovered that most cyber attacks occurred in the hospitality industry. Additionally, the survey revealed that cybercriminals targeted small organizations’ customers and employees in order to get through to larger organizations.

The Communications minister for Ghana, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has described Ghana’s cybersecurity as a developing one. As such, efforts are being made to curb cyber attacks with the establishment of the National Cyber Security Centre.
