Researchers from the award-winning cyber resilience company, Upguard, have uncovered a massive leak of data of 123 million American households, leaving them at risk to cyber attacks.
The Upguard Cyber Risk Team has revealed that the computer software and marketing analytics company, Alteryx, left the cloud-based data repository poorly secured. Upguard retrieved the data from a misconfigured Amazon Web Service S3 cloud storage permitting anyone with an account to gain access to the database.
Personal information of the 123 million American households exposed included their ages, genders, addresses, occupations, phone numbers, number of children, mortgage and financial details which cyber criminals are likely to find very valuable.
Sources have revealed that Experian, a consumer credit agency sold the data to Alteryx. Alteryx, has underplayed the threat posed by the leak, claiming that the data uncovered did not include names of their clients.
For consumers whose personal information were leaked, the question still remains whether they are truly safe online.
