Uber Forced to Operate by Local Taxi Rules

The European Union Court of Justice (“ECJ”) has officially ruled a verdict which in legal terms pronounces Uber as a transportation company. The verdict legally instructs Uber to operate under local taxi rules although Uber argued that it is not a cab firm.

According to a report published by BBC, the ECJ in their ruling said that a service provider whose mission is to connect through the use of smartphone application and for profit, non professional drivers engaging their own vehicle to transport persons who wish to make urban journeys should be categorized as a service in a field of transportation in EU law”.

Although Uber completely disagrees with the court’s analogy, the company has mentioned that the verdict  won’t have significant impact on their operations now but will certainly affect their future operations and partnerships with national governments.
