Following allegations that data from 50 million Facebook users were misused, European Union leaders urged social networks to protect private information of users.
In a meeting held in Brussels, the European Union Heads of State, emphasized the need for transparent practices and full protection of citizens’ privacy and personal data. Furthermore, Facebook’s Chief Executive, Mark Zuckerberg, was invited by European Parliament head, Antonio Tajani, to explain the data-breach scandal between Facebook and Cambridge Analytica.
In a statement by EU Justice Commissioner, Vera Jourova, the General Data Protection Regulation(GDPR), set to be implemented in May 2018, will not apply to companies breaching the law before its implementation date.
