Microsoft Sends Data Centre Offshore In Orkney

Microsoft, one of the biggest software developers, has sunk a 40-foot data centre (a white cylinder containing computers) into the ocean. The data centre has a life span of five years and the potential of storing five million movies. The data centre in the ocean is meant to increase the speed of delivery and quality of processed data.

The data centre, will have its electricity source from Orkney’s wind farms and tidal power via offshore underground cables. The underground cables will serve the function of transporting processed data from the Offshore Data Centre to the inhabitants living close to Orkney.

The data centre will be underwater for a year to enable researchers track its performance.
