In Washington, a US supreme court restricted access to security officials’ ability to obtain mobile phone data from users involved in criminal investigations. The 5 – 4 decision concluded that, the police would need a warrant to search a suspect’s phone before it is presented in trial.
Previously, the police got access to mobile data through wireless connections without a warrant. However, following the ruling, security officials would need a court approved warrant to get such access.
The court ruling follows a brief filing by some tech giants urging the supreme court to restrict access to users’ private data by law enforcement agencies.
